Bella Vista Breathes a Sigh of Relief

We’d imagine many of you recall the controversy that was set off last winter when a developer purchased the vacant lot on the corner of 9th & Bainbridge, and proposed a new home that would cover “Autumn,” a beloved mural. In the end, the developer built the home, and the mural is now lost.

So you can imagine what came into our minds the other day when we were in the neighborhood and spotted zoning notices at 10th & Bainbridge, on the site of another David Guinn mural.

Upon closer inspection, the zoning notices are alerting to community to plans to legalize the parking lot on the site, rather than build a new home to cover up the mural. Bella Vistans rejoice, “Winter: Crystal Snowscape” is here to stay!

    The ultimate goal should be to cover up all these crappy murals.

    I’d rather see a real house there than a painting of one. building one there would also eliminate the blight of a surface parking lot.

    Agree… they are supposed to be placeholders. There are many examples of murals that were developed over and repainted elsewhere… no need to preserve them for the most part. The highly visible ones that decorate a blank space that cannot be developed over should be the ones given the most attention/maintenance etc.

    The question is what happens if the illegal parking lot isn’t legalized and what hardship do the owners have that justifies legalization?

    Don’t disagree; the idea isn’t that we necessarily think that there shouldn’t be a building here, but that many people who live in the neighborhood wanted to preserve the mural and the lot at 9th & Bainbridge

    Beautifying an empty lot with a kitschy mural is like clearing up a pimple by drawing a big red arrow pointing at it.

    i want to buy the lot and charge people for parking and taking pictures of the beautiful mural!
