welcome to Fishtown

The other day, while perusing the Inquirer, we read about a new promotion at Sugarhouse: Sugarbeach. Today, we had a chance to check it out and if nothing else we’ll give credit to the Sugarhouse people for trying to think a little outside the box.

You may recall that back in May, we told you about discovering a public walkway behind the casino, next to the Delaware River. Check it out:

The path

Now, from June 30th – July 8th, the casino has transformed this pedestrian path into a mini-beach for the public. All it took was 110 tons of sand and some real palm trees, and you suddenly feel like you’re downashore on the Delaware. With drinks, games, food, and fans that are constantly spraying mist in your face, it’s a pretty neat change of pace. Here’s the schedule for the week.

Now, check out these hilarious images:

Schedule is posted

Looking toward the "beach"

On the "beach!"

We were tempted to step on it but decided to be nice

Another view

Goofy tropical drinks for sale!

We’re thinking, maybe we’ll visit again one night this week to drink a Pina Colada and listen to some spinning. Truth be told, we kind of regret that we didn’t know about this thing for the fireworks last Saturday night. That woulda been pretty sweet.

Ah well, there’s always Sugarbeach next year.

Or, you know, the actual beach this year.

So apparently when the city gets developers to build multi-use paths in exchange for development rights it means those paths will become beaches.  Good call, city.

Like you said, at least someone is “thinking outside the box” ! .  Great photos.  I was not aware of it either until now.  Thanks for the post!

Are you kidding me?  It’s a week long transformation.  Why do people like you ALWAYS have to find something negative to say?

agreed. sugarhouse shouldn’t get to use this public area for self promotion. they have enough space down there already.

Its amazing how there’s always liberals on here crying about someone doing something, that they consider wrong!! Get a life!

This city is soo unappreciative of developers!  This city needs all the help it can get!! And it’s people like you always stand in the way, anytime someone wants to do something! This city is one of the lease attractive cities to build in, because of the cost of construction, and low rents. And when they do come, all the liberals wants to stand in the way. This is why the waterfront is so underdeveloped!  Get a life you looser!

About 20 years ago there was a beach bar in that location (I forget the name) and the rats used to run along the sand.

Right now it’s a pretty irrelevant section of the East Coast Greenway disconnected from other segments.  In the future this should be a somewhat important link between the northeast and Center City for cyclists and pedestrians.  I don’t want to see the precedent of Sugar House being able to cover a bike path with sand because it’s outside their front door.  When the surrounding trails are complete it would be analogous to putting sand over a section of the Schuylkill River Trail.

Personally, I think Sugar House should have built to code with only legally required variances.  The city should have built a good quality trail along the Columbus Blvd. and then this wouldn’t be an issue.  But the city thought it was a good idea to get Sugar House to build part of the trail and now it’s a semi-public place with less benefit for those of us who happen to use it for transportation and recreation but the city pretends it’s a high quality public space.

you have a point about them blocking a public trail, but in all honesty, this isn’t even a usable stretch of path. It doesn’t connect to anything. You need to bike through the casino’s parking lot to reach this point, and that is also the only way out. So, until this is something that is as widely used as the schuylkill river trail, then I think it is ok for them to add some sand out there.
