welcome to Francisville

Last week, when we were snapping photos of demolition in preparation for the massive MJL development at 19th and Poplar Sts., we noticed 878 N 19th St., a gorgeous old brownstone that’s gotten some unfortunate plastic surgery in recent years.

Tree in the way

Better

We thought that perhaps this resulted from damage caused by the demolition of the church next door, but this was definitely not the case. As you can see below, it was like this before the church came down.

Two years ago

One thing is clear- it mars the face of what is otherwise a very attractive old building. Does anybody want to suggest why someone thought that this might be a good idea?

An easy ‘fix’ for this unfortunate situation would be a few coats of paint on that faux stone, selecting a color to compliment or accent the brownstone.  It might not be the best solution, but it is the most feasible at this point.

looks like it had a corner turret that was lost as well as the cornice…

most likely the owner (current or past) didn’t have the money that the original owner did

Property owner is a local investor who owns a number of properties in the neighborhood, including the two row homes next door to 878 N.19th. See the BRT website for info. Check out 2036 Poplar.

It seems most people out there think that any sort of change or alteration is a sign of improvement and shows they are taking care of the building.  They are just too ignorant to see how this remuddling can gradually result in the demise of a neighborhood.
