welcome to Graduate Hospital

Almost four years ago, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place, announcing the official opening of Julian Abele Park, at 22nd & Carpenter. Since then, the park has experienced a Rock n’ Run, a few 5K runs, farmer’s markets, a concert series or two, a new mural (which may be eliminated in the future, if a proposed cafe in the park ever gets built), the closing of the restaurant across the street, the opening of a new restaurant across the street, and untold quantities of dog waste.

The park today

From the north

This first phase of the park should be considered a great success, for all the reasons above (aside from the poop) and more. Considering what this site looked like previously, and the alarming lack of green space in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood, the park, to this point, has represented a tremendous first step. And now, after over a year of bureaucratic delays, the park is ready to take the next step, which we originally told you about last May.

Phase 2 design

By the time springtime rolls around, the park should be totally transformed. New benches, lots of pavers, an entry gate on Carpenter St., new landscaping, and a replanted lawn will turn the park into a space that’s welcoming to neighbors and families seeking a respite from the surrounding environs of brick and concrete. Considering some of the impressive new parks that we’ve told you about in recent months, we have high hopes for Julian Abele Park 2.0, and can’t wait to see the finished product.

As this construction begins, movers and shakers in G-Ho can start to think about its next project- a legit dog run. After all, the myriad neighborhood dogs have to do their business somewhere, right?

I have an article about this and Hawthorne Park with some more details and pictures on my blog, http://www.philadelphiaheights.wordpress.com.

What’s up with the concrete road cutting across the park?  It doesn’t seem necessary for how infrequently I’m imagining it will be used for stated purposes.

Just kind of kills the mojo on that rendering…

Ori is building six homes on that parcel and moving into one of them.

The access path will be concrete pavers, not a slab. We fought with the city to have this removed but to no avail. They apparently can’t stand on ladders to replace lightbulbs in the 4 lampposts so they need to pull their trucks in. Trust me commenters… we didn’t want the path.

Regardless, this design is informed from a LOT of community input and tireless effort from Friends of Julian Abele Park, whose own design was featured in the Community Design Collaborative’s Leverage exhibition last year. Lots of elements from that design were pulled into Lager Raabe Skafte’s design you see above. While there are compromises with the city, it is much better than original renderings. Expect phased improvements in the coming years as well, like that pergola actually being on the other side of the park from where it is today in a cantilevered design hanging over the path to create more of a stage feel. (First phase didn’t have enough dough to build).

Also, the sidewalks will be completely redone by PWD, but at a later date, most likely next year… expect lots of street trees and subterranean innovation in siphoning off storm water to feed our street tree’s roots. Again, it was Friends of Julian Abele Park who engaged and informed better design directly with PWD securing additional funding. This park is 8+ years in the making. I think we are all pinching ourselves that this is finally getting built.

It was so “refreshing” tonight to see the first two neigbhorhood jackasses (a white m/f couple) and their cute pup (because I really do love dogs and it is never the dog’s fault that their owners suck) squeeze through the narrow 8 inch opening between the well-fortified 6 foot fence that surrounds the park and the two rowhomes adjacent to the park just to walk the pup in the park. WTF? It’s just unbelievable. Get some brains. Learn some respect. Julian Abele is now closed. Deal with it. Find somewhere else to walk the pup. 18th and Washington is just a few blocks away! I guess we could ask the construction company to bolt the fence to the adjoining houses but would it really matter?

Thank you for the insight… I shoulda known it was the footprints of bureaucracy along that pathway.

Our neighborhood is thankful for all of that hard work that is about to pay off!
