welcome to Graduate Hospital

A few days ago, The Christian Street Cafe, a new corner store/cafe business opened at the corner of 17th & Christian. This space has been vacant for years, aside from a short spell last fall as an event space for BetterBlockPhilly. The store, which is apparently not yet finished filling its shelves with inventory, will carry many necessities and will make panini sandwiches to order.

The store

Closer look

Perhaps taking a cue from nearby Reyes Grocery, or possibly just operating on a low budget, this new store has some of the most reserved signage we’ve ever seen. We’d imagine that something larger could be in the works, but if the current signs are any indication, this corner is in store for something reserved and tasteful, rather than something that causes a seizure upon driving by.

Oy vey

We’re guessing the neighbors appreciate the contrast.

Note:  The original Reyes awnings have been gone for a while now, and a new and (much) improved design is scheduled to be presented at SOSNA Zoning this coming Wednesday night.  See:  http://southofsouth.org/events/july-zoning-committee-meeting

Ended up getting it at Kim Van. (Still waiting for Reyes to stock <2%.) Reply With Quote + Reply to Thread « Previous Thread | Next Thread » [...]

Hey Fox, doesn’t it disappoint that GradHo can’t attract more quality retail on some of its most prominent corners?  How many bodegas can the neighborhood support?

  • Dr_gingivitis

It does disappoint, however in this case I know a couple
of restaurants looked at this space and were deterred by the fact that it is
across the street from a school, which would probably limit its ability to ever
pull a liquor license.  That being said,
there are other uses in between bar/restaurant and bodega that would be nice in
    the area.

That’s incredibly reserved signage. I do enjoy the contrast though. From low scale to mid/high scale across the street.
