welcome to Graduate Hospital

A month ago, we told you about the horrendous signage at the newly opened Reyes Grocery on the corner of 20th & Carpenter. Thanks to the efforts of near neighbors, the owners of this establishment willingly removed the offensive signs, and entered into a cooperative arrangement with these neighbors to come up with new signage. Store owner Pedro Reyes is on board with a new design from Chris Fernandez of 5to8, which was presented last night at the monthly SOSNA zoning board meeting.

Here’s a look at the recent history of this corner:

At the meeting, Mr. Reyes sought support for both a variance to legalize the new signage, as well as a variance to legalize the preparation and selling of cold food for takeout. The audience seemed extremely receptive to these requests, especially in light of his willingness to work with the neighbors to improve the signs. Through a translator, Reyes apologized for the original awnings, indicating that he had gotten bad advice from the company that produced the signs.

In addition to the new signage and the legalized sandwiches, Reyes committed to change the exterior lighting so that the signs are not backlit. He also agreed to install a permanent trash can for customers and passersby.

Isn’t it nice when business owners and neighbors can work together and come up with something that’s better for everybody? Kind of makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I think it’d be nicer if they didn’t need a variance and just used the signs they could by right. A variance won’t tell them what signs they can use–it will just allow them amounts of projecting signage.

By right signage is next to none for most places. Virtually every retail business in Philly needs a variance for their signage.

Ah, I see a hipster designer got involved. Much improved.

I think the fact that the neighbors care enough about there neighborhood to try and work with owner to take down that seriously awful sign shows that they do have lives. They have lives that they care about and a neighborhood they care about. And if you feel that the first awning was tasteful than I would suggest never taking a job as an awning salesman.

its as tasteful as that douchy pic u have of urself, and

The variance won’t dictate the style of sign but the neighbors’ support of the variance is certainly contingent on the design.

    Any way the sadwiches return?

No.  Virtually all retail businesses want a variance.  It’s plenty to advertise the name and type of your store.  If we want to give everyone more signage we should–it shouldn’t be done willy-nilly by variance.

the integrity of this bodega has been compromised.

Thanks Chuck! Your mom seemed to thoroughly appreciate it. At least I am comfortable making comments without anonymity. If you wanna come on here and be a douche, at least don’t hide behind some internet handle.

  • Signage Matters

Thank goodness they changed the sign.  When I first saw it I thought the old sign was the new one and I was shocked, that old sign belongs in North Philly along with the pink, purple, and orange signs.  The new sign is way better, more elegant.  Someone here said people shouldn’t be concerned with signs but my first impression of the first sign was that I wouldn’t shop there, the 2nd sign, ok, I would buy something there.

  • Signage Matters

Oh come on, strong arm immigrants to get your way, get real.  A business has to appeal to it’s customers, if they wanted to leave the sign and have less business all the power to them.  Yes, different ethnic groups have different styles, likes etc.  However, every business owner has to know their customer market and that old sign did not fit and it was obviously not appreciated.  The owner is lucky that the residents spoke out, they are who he needs to appeal to in order to make the business successful.  Failing to know your customers is the first thing a business can do to fail and the outward representation does matter, it’s the first impression.
