welcome to Locust Square

In July, the Boardwalk to South Street trail project connecting West Philadelphia and University City to the Banks will be bid. The Schuylkill Banks Development Corporation is working with the city to build a 2000-foot-long concrete structuring that will run parallel to the eastern shore of the Schuylkill from Locust Street to the South Street Bridge. Michael Baker Engineers will build a ramp to link the 15′-wide boardwalk for bikers and pedestrians who would otherwise block the trail.  Three points of access will be provided along with several overlook areas to enjoy the river view. The construction phase of the project is expected to take two years.

    This makes me so happy!

Looks great, though some of the lower lying areas of the current bike path get swamped during storms. Hopefully this boardwalk can handle those water-levels.

I hate to be a buzz kill, but this doesn’t further the development of the river front? There is already pathway at this point in the river! Wouldn’t it make more sense if the same resources would expand the river walk further south, spanning the area that is choked off by the CSX right away? The eventual goal of the walk way is to tie the river front at South Street to the property that was donated by DuPont, and eventually connecting to Bartram Gardens by a pedestrian bridge; somewhere down by the trolley works building (been long time since I have seen plan). Lets not waste scarce resources on a bridge to know where, but on the extension of a walkway that will eventually connect to the Delaware River.

This is about extending the southernmost part of the Schuylkill River Trail to the South St. bridge–it is expanding the river walk southward to the area choked off by the CSX right-of-way.

There is no walkway at this point, hence the bridge. The round-about in the third photo is as far as it goes now, without crossing the tracks and continueing on sidewalks.

Why do we continue to build recreational paths for cyclists and pedestrians? It’s asking for a battle. Peds walk four or more across maybe with double strollers and cyclists fly by at 8 miles an hour and peds get pissed. Divide the kinds of use please.

So it was supposed to bid in July 2011.  So where are we now?  It’s almost March 2012.  I’m not aware of construction started.  This is the project that never gets started.
