So Much Building is Happening on the 500 Block of Washington Ave.

We got a tip from a reader about a hole in the ground at 5th and Washington Ave., so we headed over there to investigate. When we got there, we found so much construction activity that we weren’t even sure what hole they were referring to.

For a stretch of Washington Ave. that doesn’t seem terribly desirable, the amount of construction on this block is surprising to say the least. We don’t imagine that people are scurrying to live as close as possible to Southward Public Housing Projects? Well, maybe everyone just wants easier access to delicious pastries and Pho at New World Plaza.

    I was down there on Saturday for a banh mi at Ba Le, and I saw sites on the north side of the street had had huge banners for a construction company… and it said “THE FUTURE OF WASHINGTON AVE”

    one of those is probably the corner property that collapsed a few years ago, a house gave out and went down, probably 4-5 years ago now, pretty sure it was that corner though.

    And PWD/Streets is redoing Washington Ave. in the coming years.  Hopefully that will give it more attractive crossings.
