welcome to Pennsport

A reader checked in recently, wondering about the status of Del’s II, a shuttered sandwich shop at Front & Tasker. We swung by there recently, and the space appears quiet indeed.

Old shop

Love the signage

The space was purchased by Michael Delbuono (hence the name Del’s, we assume) back in 1981, shortly after the completion of I-95 across the street. From the looks of the space, the shop had been operating for about that long, serving breakfast foods and sandwiches to the masses. And from the looks of the exterior, the space hasn’t really been spruced up for decades. Peeking in the windows, the place looks well worn, but seems like it could reopen at a moment’s notice.

With new construction happening all over Pennsport, this commercial space could indeed have some value if it were cleaned up a little bit. Perhaps a little breakfast/lunch spot, but a little higher end than the luncheonette that closed up shop? Or maybe a southern location for Paesano’s, the delicious sandwich shop with two other locations? Or does somebody in the neighborhood have another idea for this location?

I’m not sure that it could really be called a sandwich shop. I’m pretty sure they only sold lottery tickets and the occasional bus trip to AC. I noticed that they were out cleaning up the weeds yesterday. It’d be great to see small diner or cafe there.

The place only sold lottery tickets but had all the fixing of the deli it once was. Tables, counters, meat slicers, and old electronic poker games all sat vacant in the spacious place.

I had a vision of a foodie-cum-southie establishment here serving up some variation of gourmet sandwiches in a gritty “authentic” setting… inspired by the likes of FedNut.
