welcome to Point Breeze

The 19th Street Baptist Church, which occupies a beautiful building right near the corner of 19th and Wharton Sts., is falling apart before our eyes. Last week, it received a Notice of Violation from L&I for its crumbling walls and collapsing roof. The notice informs the church and passersby that the city could demolish the building at any time and send the bill to the church if they don’t repair or demolish the building within thirty days. We don’t imagine that the city will be demolishing the church anytime soon, but if the building continues to degenerate at this pace it may become necessary as a matter of public safety. Such a shame.

The notice was posted in a couple of spots on the building

Stucco crumbling off the walls

Walls that appear to be collapsing. Seems structural.

Part of the roof is caving in

I’m about to make it worse: It’s a Frank Furness!

And something else…that green rock on the façade? It’s called serpentinite, only forms at tectonic boundaries, and is most commonly found in the mantle. Ergo, expensive as shit. Somebody wealthy built this church.

Check out serpentinite sometime: it’s pretty cool.

Such a gorgeous building, shame on the congregation for not keeping up with it.  Reminds me of the West Chester green stone homes.

Hey, where has Claudia Sherrod and Tiffany Greene been, being that they care about Point Breeze so much.

Yep. if the the bank and archdiosis would release the trust money from the Margarita Lewis Trust Fund our church wouldn’t look like this.  That money was set aside in the early 1900′s by Miss Margarita Lewis herself for the upkeeep the church and the bank that’s holding the trust money knows this. Such a sad shame.  Bernadette Harris-Butts
