welcome to Point Breeze

A week ago, we first brought you the story of local realtor and developer Ori Feibush’s efforts to green 1138-42 S. 20th St., a formerly blighted lot that’s been owned by the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority for nearly four decades. Over the past seven days, the story, first broken by the Philadelphia Daily News, has exploded across the country and the world, with coverage from every major news outlet from Idaho to Pakistan.

The garden

Today, Feibush has launched PleasefixPhilly.com, a site that compiles many of the photos and documents associated with this crazy tale, along with a letter from Feibush himself lambasting the PRA.

In response to this, the PRA is holding a press conference at the site of the garden today, at 4pm. We’ll be interested to see what they have to say on this subject.

Full disclosure: Ori Feibush owns OCF Realty, the parent company of Naked Philly.

Glad to see someone take on the entrenched do-nothing Democratic City Council. They spent yesterday condemning Mitt Romney for speaking out about the culture of dependency in our country rather than condemning a corrupt, do-nothing city agency like the Redevelopment Authority.

The article should mention that this gentleman also runs this blog

I hope Mr. Feibush runs for mayor!

Ori must be salivating over the possibilities of even more free publicity.

    It does. Read much?

It would actually be a wonderful trend. He never implied that he automatically owned the lot because the cleaned it up. Better to have this temporarily until a nice building goes up than a trash-filled, dangerous landfill.

Ugh, I guess I’m going to be the wet blanket here. While the way the PRA has handled this is absolutely deplorable, there are legitimate liability reasons why the City of Philadelphia should be worried about what Feibush did. To wit, a 5 year old kid is with his parents, jumping up and down on one of those picnic tables, falls off, lands wrong on his head and is paralyzed from the neck down. First person being sued is not Feibush, but the City of Philadelphia. And the parents will get a very big settlement, what with the attractive nuisance and all. Additionally, and I’m surprised that Feibush is trying to be so righteously indignant here, IT’S NOT HIS PROPERTY. We can call the City of Philadelphia a bunch of idiots and clowns for their unwillingness or inability to sell Feibush the land or at least sell him a ground lease or grant him an access easement, but it’s not like the City is in any way obligated to do so. Property is still property, even if you are pissed off because someone doesn’t want to sell to you.

This is a lot more than just “cleaning it up”. I thought the same thing until I saw what he did – he essentially created an outdoor eating/drinking area/extension for his business. In other words, he is most likely increasing his personal income by utilizing someone else’s property for his business. And he owns a realty company – this is incredibly problematic.
