welcome to South Philly

A year ago, someone posted on Philadelphia Speaks about a blighted property on the corner of 10th & Winton, in South Philly. Yesterday, the thread came back to life as a neighbor discovered that the owner of the property is Patricia Mendelsohn, of Tyson Realty. The poster, AngelB, even went so far as to contact the owner’s office in the Northeast to confirm that they do, indeed, own this dilapidated specimen.

As you can see, this place should probably be condemned.

Another angle

Typically, properties like this tend to be tax delinquent, which allows persistent neighbors to force them to sheriff’s sale. We were a little surprised to see that the property is up to date on taxes. We were even more surprised to see that the reason that the property is current on taxes is that the tax burden is $0. Yes folks, this wreck of a property is exempt from property taxes, and probably has been for fifteen years.

It seems that Mendelsohn purchased the property from HUD in 2000, which took over ownership in 1998. We’re guessing that while HUD was steward for the property, the tax burden was erased, and never brought back. Paging the Office of Property Assessment! Come on down and get this property on the books! It’s only been twelve years, why not put it on the list before Christmas, eh?

Pathetic…meanwhile the city continually cries “Tax revenues are lower than they’ve ever been…..boo hoo”. Com’on Mayor Nutter, enough already.

They have had a whole slew of L&I Violations in the past: http://www.phila.gov/data/Pages/default.aspx?entity=locationhistory&eid=618438.
They’re obviously in violation of L&I’s functional window and door policy. A neighbor shold report them.

what a crime where did the original shingles go?

Michael Kovach the only thing nutter seems to care about is whether he will get the chance to sing rappers delight this weekend! Murder rate out of control and Nutter is more concerned about bringing a former drug dealer to sing in Philly!

  • you know who!

Take this picture and Multiply this issue by 70,000 and thats the whole scope of philadelphia and how it handles vacant and blight properties . Not only are they horrible at handling these issues ,they want us to give city council Land Banking powers to do what ? add another level of scamming to fixing blight !

City Council is okay with this but not when planning to charge people their fair share of property taxes they scream bloody murder. Bill Green Sr was right about city council 30 years ago and that saying is still true, unfortunately, today.

Check the Philly Speaks thread for an update and pic: the exterior was redone and the house looks occupied. Victory!
