If you’ve passed by 22nd and Catharine Streets any time recently, you’ve surely noticed that change is afoot at this corner. As we told you about a few months back, SOSNA has spearheaded an effort to transform a fenced-in corner lot into an attractive little public green space called Catharine Park. Local landscape architects Composite Inc. have been hard at work over the past few months, repaving the lot with permeable pavers, installing new planters, and creating a play area for young kids.

Meanwhile, catty corner to Catharine Park, a new contemporary-style building has replaced a long-vacant eyesore. On the first floor of this building, Ultimo Coffee has been working on opening a second location for several months. With a Counterculture Coffee

As we were walking over to Quick Fixx the other night for some quick but delicious dinner, we noticed some new signage at 1609 South St., most recently home of Pumpkin Market. You may recall, this business moved across the street to 1610 South St. a couple of years ago, consolidating with another Pumpkin enterprise, resulting into a combo market/cafe. Since then, the space has sat vacant. But not for long.

It seems that Flying Kite Media is on to something. This week, Elise Vider did a piece on the rising fortunes of South Street West, discussing the infrastructure improvements through the efforts of the SSWBA, the explosion of new restaurants, and the continuing redevelopment in the years to come. Over the past year, we’ve explored the changing landscape on South Street West on a micro level, bringing almost every new building and business to your attention individually. Ms. Vider does a nice job bringing it all together.
