welcome to

As we’ve grown as a site, we’ve worked with many Philadelphia freelancers who contribute to NakedPhilly, some of which have made mistakes. Amy Z. Quinn of PlanPhilly has let us know our two stories on Hawthornes and Sweet Elizabeth’s originated with her story on Newsworks. Our writer took the lead for both stories from Quinn, and while much of the research was original from our writer’s interviews with the owners, Quinn considers this plagiarism. We have taken immediate steps to make sure this never happens again. We look forward to working with Quinn in the future and hope to properly cite her work moving forward.

While I understand the need for professional cordiality and to not step on ranking toes, there is also a reason blogs were developed – to publish ideas outside of the tight restrictions of formal journalism and to respond to other pieces of published news or ideas. I like this blog and you’ve done your due dilligence. Carry on.

Okay- plagiarism is a heavy, heavy charge to level at someone and looking at the stories linked, it doesn’t come close to applying here.

  • Amy Quinn

Actually, it’s the part where specific words were copied from my stories that are plagiarism, not the overall ideas themselves. I’ve been a blogger for a long time and a professional journalist even longer, and the (credible) bloggers in this city understand the ethics of including links, referrals and credit when you get ideas — and words — from somewhere else.
Thanks for your attention and honesty on this. Onward.

Hopefully everyone can learn from this and move on, cause both Newsworks and Naked Philly are awesome sites that I love to read to keep up on Philly while I’m away!

I’m sorry, but I’ve spent the last 15 minutes trying to find the articles on Plan Philly / Newsworks that are relevant to this post, and I can’t! Is it just that Plan Philly lacks SEO and user friendly navigability, and this is why they are pissed that maybe their stories aren’t as popular? As someone who has worked in this field for 11 years, with a buddy sitting next to me who has worked in the press for 28 yrs, I can’t understand what the issue is here. Everyone picks up leads. If you’re covering the same story it’s bound to be reiterated in similar fashion. This just seems like kindergarten ‘I said it first’…

Oh Naked Philly, didn’t you learn the lesson from “You’ve Got a Friend in Pennsylvania” that it is redundant to have “have” and “got” in the same sentence?
We have nothing to hide. Good.
We got nothing to hide. Yes.
We have got nothing to hide? Wrong.
